TIRUPATI. The continued shortage of groundnut seed even long after the kharif season has set-in making the irate farmers of the semi-arid Chittoor district take to streets. Reports are pouring in from different parts of the district about the farmers putting up road blockades, laying siege to godowns or milling around police stations demanding the immediate distribution of the permits and the seed. It is said that against a requirement of 1.29 lakh qunitals of seeds to be taken up for sowing in 1.56 lakh hectares in the district, barely 22,275 quintals has been released till first week. Farmer, who are forced to depend on the Government’s subsidised seed. Reports indicate that with there being no fresh release of seed stocks for the last one week, farmers are getting restive and have resorted to demonstrations.
