Nod for 50 more seats in S.V. Medical College and 150 for Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Kadapa
ANANTAPUR: Doubts hovering over the issue of recognition to the Government Medical College here by the Medical Council of India (MCI), particularly in the wake of State Government’s reported support to Union Health Minister A. Ramdoss in his efforts to snap the powers of MCI, are learnt to have been dispelled. A meeting of the MCI held at New Delhi on Thursday was learnt to have cleared the recognition to 100 seats in GMC here, 50 additional seats in S.V. Medical College at Tirupati and 150 seats in Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences at Kadapa, according to the reliable information reaching here. MCI visit
A team of MCI visited the medical college and the teaching hospital here on May 18 and 19 and was learnt to have expressed satisfaction on the infrastructure, teaching and non-teaching staff and other facilities. It’s a known fact that a majority of teachers (doctors) and nurses who were deputed to the college for the purpose of the MCI visit had gone to their original places of work after the visit. Bed capacity increased
However, the State Government had issued orders increasing the bed capacity of the hospital from the existing 350 to 500 and sanction of Rs. 4.5 crores for filling 500 odd posts in the college and hospitals. The hospital had been getting funds only for 350 beds even after the medical college was recognised by the MCI with the notion that the teaching hospital had 500 beds since 2000. The MCI was learnt to have taken serious note of the Government’s support to Mr. Ramdoss’s efforts to clip its powers.
