KARIMNAGAR: Powerloom weavers of the Sircilla town, who have launched indefinite strike since last 10 days, have called off their strike following an agreement with the powerloom owners on the increase of wages on Wednesday night. Sircilla RDO, DSP A. Mogilaiah, CI P. Venugopal Rao, SI K. Nagendra Chary, representatives of powerloom owners and trade union leaders held discussions for fixing the wages of the weavers working on the looms producing cotton cloth. After hectic parleys, the owners had agreed to fix the wages at 18.5 paise per 10 pics of cotton cloth produced on the looms against the demand of 22 paise per 10 pics. Earlier, the weavers were getting the wages of only 16 paise per pics of cloth produced. On Monday, the powerloom owners, trade union leaders and Labour Department authorities had fixed the wages for the weavers working on looms producing polyester cloth at 13.5 paise per 10 pics of cloth against the existing rates of 10 paise per 10 pics. It may be recalled that about 10,000 weavers work on powerlooms producing polyester cloth and another 5,000 weavers work on looms producing cloth cloth. Besides, another 5,000 weavers work on other allied industry of powerlooms such as sizing, warping, dyeing etc. Following the success of the talks, TRS president K. Chandrashekhar Rao, who had decided to visit the Sircilla town to console the weavers, had cut-short his visit and returned back on the middle of his journey.
