Carnatic recitals in Africa

Pala C.K.Ramachandran, Carnatic musician, said Carnatic music concerts were well appreciated by audience in African countries.

Talking to reporters here on Tuesday after a tour of African countries including South Africa, Mr.Ramachandran said that he and his team performed at Durban and Johannesburg in South Afrcia and countries including Lesotho, Botswana, Zambia and Mauriti us as part of Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR)-sponsored 21-day tour of these countries. He and his team performed from May 17 to June 6 in these countries. The first of the concerts was in ‘Play House’ in Durban to a packed audience in connection with the Thyagaraja Aradhana Maholsavam in Durban jointly organised by ICCR and Indian Academy of South Africa. A lecture demonstration in Carnatic music to music students and connoisseurs in Durban on request of Indian Consulate General, Harshavardhan was appreciated by the audience.

After a two-hour programme in ‘Linder’ Auditorium in Johannesburg in South Africa, they moved to Lesotho where they performed at its capital city, Maseru. Apart from Indian connoisseurs, musicians of Lesotho and foreigners gathered at Maseru to hear them.

Another performance was at Gaborone in Botswana, where apart from a performance, the team gave a lecture demonstration also. The team consisted of vocal assistant R.V.Viswanathan, N.Ranjith on violin, Palakkad Harinarayanan on Mridangam and Manjoor Unnikrishnan on ghatam. The team also performed at Selebi-Phikwe town in Botswana.

Foreign diplomats and officials at the Indian High Commission in Zambia were presented another performance in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia.
