KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation’s upcoming solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram and the dumping of chemical wastes along the banks of the Kadamprayar in Brahmapuram poses serious threats to the fruition of the proposed Smart City project, the Brahmapuram Karshaka Sangham has warned. The Sangham, in a petition to the Chief Minister earlier this month, said since Kadamprayar was going to be the drinking water source for the Smart City project, its pollution through the waste treatment plant and chemical wastes could threaten the mega project. The plant is coming up on 100 acres in Bra hmapuram and the road leading to it passes by the Smart City project site. Officials of TECOM, the promoters of the project, who recently visited the site raised concern over this, Sangham president Maleril Paulose said. However, Deputy Mayor C.K. Manisankar rejected the contention saying that the plant was being set up in a scientific manner and would be subjected to the approval of the Pollution Control Board and environmentalists. Moreover, the High Court had directed the Corporation to speed up the construction of the plant, he said. Mr. Paulose alleged that almost 82,724 tonnes of chemical waste from hundreds of factories were being dumped annually on the banks of the Kadamprayar. In the long run, it will not only pollute Kadamprayar but would also have serious implications for the ecosystem, he said.
