Protest against book a damp squib

Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: The protest demanding ban on the controversial book “Anu deva horaganavanu” organised on Thursday by the All-India Veerashaiva Mahasabha turned out to be a damp squib thanks to poor participation from people.

Despite support coming from various Veerashiva organisations and members of different political parties, including the Rashtriya Basava Dal, the Congress, the Seva Dal, BJP and DSS, the participation was limited to office-bearers of these organisations. However, the of heads of three Veerashaiva maths, Shri Basavaprabhu Swamiji of Sri Basava Gurukul, Shri Gurusidda Swamiji of Karanji Math and Shri Siddharam Swamiji of Naganur Math participated. The protest was led by AIVM Belgaum district president B.V. Katti and S.S. Pavate, retired DIG of Police. Former Mayor Siddangouda Patil was among the other prominent leaders who participated in the protest.

All elected representatives, including legislators from the district and belonging to Veerashiva community were conspicuous by their absence.

The protesting members staged a demonstration at Rani Chennamma Circle and burnt an effigy of Banjegere Jayaprakash, author of the controversial book. They took the effigy of Minister for Home, Law and Parliamentary Affairs M.P. Prakash round the circle nearly five times and then burnt in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, condemning his reported support to the book.
