Rs. 50 lakh annual grant for Rangayana

Funds for ‘Gadi Bhavanas’ in the 62 border taluks



New facility: Minister for Kannada and Culture H.S. Mahadeva Prasad inaugurating the administrative wing of the ‘Suvarnaka Samskrutika Samuchchhaya’ in Dharwad on Thursday.

DHARWAD: Minister for Kannada and Culture H.S. Mahadeva Prasad said here on Thursday that the State Government has taken a decision to give an annual grant of Rs. 50 lakh to the Rangayana unit of Dharwad for its maintenance and theatre activities.

He was speaking after inaugurating the administrative wing of the “Suvarna Samstrutika Samuchchhaya”, the Rangayana unit of Dharwad and laying the foundation stone for the construction of the auditorium and art gallery to be built up at a cost of Rs. 1.43 crore.

The Minister said Rs. 7 lakh had been released for remodelling the Basavaraja Rajaguru amphitheatre. The Rangayana had sought an additional Rs. 18 lakh for the development of the Dharwad unit and the Government would take steps to sanction it, he said.

Mr. Prasad said the State Government had released funds for construction of the “Gadi Bhavanas” in the 62 border taluks of the State and in eight district “Rangamandirs” were being constructed. The State Government had released more funds for work related to Kannada and Culture in the golden jubilee year of the founding of the State, he said. The Department would be organising a “Samata Sambhrama”, a two-day programme, meant to encourage Dalit literature. Inaugurating the library wing of the cultural complex, Revenue Minister Jagadish Shettar appealed to Mr. Prasad to consider holding the valedictory ceremony of the golden jubilee celebrations of the unification of Karnataka in Dharwad.

He appealed to the Minister to name the art gallery that would be constructed as part of the cultural complex after noted artist D.B. Halabhavi who founded the first art school in the State in Dharwad.

Commissioner of Kannada and Culture Ka.Ta. Chikkanna, Deputy Commissioner M.S. Srikar, director of Rangayana, Mysore Chidambarrao Jambe, NWKRTC chairman Ashok Katwe, HDUDA chairman Lingaraj Patil, former MLA Chandrakanat Bellad, writers Channaveer Kanavi, Siddhalinga Pattanashetty and Giraddi Govindaraj were present.
