Exercise constant vigil in the flood-prone areas, says Subodh Yadav

‘Make arrangement to shift people during an emergency’

Madikeri: Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav on Thursday asked officials of various government departments to gear up to face any eventuality in the district arising owing to the monsoon, which was expected to arrive soon. Heavy rain lashed Madikeri city and surrounding areas on Thursday.

Presiding over a preliminary meeting to decide on steps to be taken to prevent natural disasters, Mr. Yadav told the officials not to show laxity and if they did, they would face the consequences. Officials were told to exercise constant vigil in the flood-prone areas such as Karadigodu, Guhya, Nellihudikeri, Balamuri, Betri, Bollumadu, Emmemadu, Hoddur, Kanive, Bhagamandala and shift people to rehabilitation areas to be set up nearby. School buildings and anganawadi centres could be converted into rehabilitation centres, he added. The departments of Food, Revenue and Education should respond to distress calls without wasting time, Mr. Yadav said. Expert swimmers would be put on duty apart from using mechanised boats to evacuate people in case of emergencies.

Mr. Yadav told the officials of the RTO, PWD, Panchayati Raj engineering wing to be prepared with the bulldozers and other implements to remove mud from roads in cases of landslips and to trim tree branches.
