Demand to take over Thuthampara estate

Staff Reporter

PALAKKAD: A march taken out by environmental organisations to the office of the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Nemmara, near here on Thursday, demanded that the Government take over the Thuthampara estate in Nelliampathy Hills as the lease period is expiring on June 30, 2007.

Inaugurating the march John Peruvanthanam, convener, Kerala Paristhithi Coordination Committee, said the Government should take over the estate as it had no powers to renew the lease.

The renewal of the lease of forest land was considered as fresh lease by the Central Forest Conservation Act of 1980. Under the Act, the State Government had to get prior sanction of the Central Government to renew any forest lease, he said.

Since the area is adjacent to the Parambikulam Wild Life Sanctuary, it should be taken over and make it the buffer zone of the sanctuary.
