Sops for IT firms

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government’s information technology (IT) policy promises a slew of incentives to IT companies operating from locations other than special economic zones in the State. Companies operating from Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam districts will get a standard investment subsidy (SIS) equivalent to 30 per cent of the fixed capital investment, subject to a limit of Rs. 15 lakh. For those located in other districts, SIS will be 40 per cent of the fixed capital investment, with Rs. 25 lakh as the limit.

The policy, approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday, says the Government will constitute a technology development fund for the IT industry.

Grant will be made available from this fund for research and development projects approved by a committee constituted for the purpose.

The fruits of such projects will be extended to the general public under suitable free software licenses. These fiscal incentives will remain in force till December 1, 2010.

IT units, Government IT parks, certified IT parks and Akshaya e-centres will get electricity at tariffs applicable for “high tension 1 industry” and “low tension 4 industry” depending on the supply and connected load. (The present tariff under the former category is Rs. 3 per unit, in addition to a demand charge of Rs. 270 per kVA billed every month, and that under the latter is Rs. 3.25 a unit, in addition to a fixed charge of Rs. 45 per kW of connected load per month.)
