Sreemathy should quit: UDF

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The United Democratic Front (UDF) has demanded Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy’s resignation for her failure to take effective action to tackle chikungunya, dengue and other viral fever reported from the State.

Addressing a press conference after a UDF leadership meeting, UDF convener P.P. Thankachan said the Government had failed to implement the core decisions taken at the all-party meeting held two weeks ago. The Hospitals and Public Health Centres still lacked doctors, paramedical staff and basic infrastructure. The Health Department could not display the kind of seriousness that the Army and the Union Government had shown, he said. The promise to provide free ration has not materialised. The Government order on free ration had complicated matters further by requiring patients to produce certificates to be eligible for free ration. The error has been since corrected, but the UDF held the view that free ration should be given to all persons in the affected areas.

He said it was unfortunate that the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues, with the exception of the Health Minister, should have avoided participating in the sanitation campaign that was undertaken as per the all-party decision.

On Munnar, the UDF opposed the Government’s move to spare political parties from eviction proceedings. The Government cannot discriminate between political parties and other encroachers. The Chief Minister should examine the allegation that a member of his Cabinet had encroached upon Government land.
