ROGUE LORRY: A water tanker that rammed a tree near the Wallajah Road- Bells Road junction on Thursday.

CHENNAI: A water lorry rammed into a tree near the Wallajah Road and Bells Road junction in Chepauk around noon on Thursday.

The vehicle, which lost control, knocked down a couple of two-wheelers parked nearby before coming to a halt. The lorry and motorbikes were damaged badly in the accident, and the lorry driver had to be extricated from the vehicle. He suffered minor injuries. By-standers said the tree had fortuitously prevented the wayward lorry from causing serious damage to pedestrians and motorists on the busy stretch.

Traffic on the road was disrupted for some time with the lorry partially blocking the turn into Wallajah Road from Bells Road.

Police, who arrived on the scene almost immediately, cleared the way for traffic and dispersed the crowd that had gathered there.
