CHENNAI: Vandalur zoo will soon get four new battery-operated vans and road rails, Forest Minister N. Selvaraj has said. The Minister, who visited the Arignar Anna Zoological Park (AAZP) in Vandalur on Thursday, said the new purchases were needed because the existing road rails and vans were over seven years old. The battery-operated vans take the visitors on the lion safari, while the road rails are used for trips around the 600-hectare zoo.

The zoo received 11.88 lakh visitors in 2006-07 as against 8.48 lakh in the previous financial year, he said.

The zoo’s revenue also increased from Rs.1.44 crore in 2005-06 to Rs.2.02 crore in the last financial year. Additional rest sheds with granite tiles have been provided at the zoo, he said.
