CHENNAI: One more proposal, this time to identify 93 acres at Morai near Avadi, for a composting facility was placed at the Ambattur council meeting on Thursday, even as councillors complained that several such proposals were yet to take off. The irked councillors raised questions about the status of solid waste management project in the municipality. Ward 32 councillor Uma Kannan pointed out that several proposals remained only on paper. Work to prevent incineration of garbage at Athipattu dumping yard was yet to be taken up, she added. Cutting across party lines, the councillors complained about the erratic garbage disposal, especially in the wards entrusted to private agency and inadequate vehicles to clear the waste. A municipal official said that the local body generated 200 tonnes of garbage and needed 44 acres of land for composting. Besides the land belonging to the Municipality at Sekkadu, 40 acres have been identified at Kuthambakkam near Poonamallee. As the land identified at Morai was only 15 km away, garbage transportation would be easier, the official said. Inadequate illumination on the streets was another issue that dominated the meeting. Ward 10 councillor M.T. Michael Raj said the stretch on Ambattur Red Hills Road near S.V.Nagar was witness to at least one accident every day due to lack of proper lighting. The municipal chairman K.N. Sekar said steps would be taken to provide streetlights. Ward 24 councillor L. Thilagavathi urged that the road laying work at Korattur must be completed soon as the delay of blacktopping coupled with poor lighting led to several accidents. Several councillors complained that water supply was dwindling in the wards at Korattur, Padi and Ambattur. They also wanted the encroachments on the road to be removed during blacktopping to prevent water logging in the rainy season. Ward 12 councillor P. Madhi wanted the municipality to blacktop the damaged stretch near Ambattur telephone exchange on Chennai Tiruvallur road. The municipal chairman said the issue would be looked into. The council members also discussed the badly maintained burial grounds in the local body, especially Mannurpet, the fees charged and issue of license to burial ground workers. The council passed resolutions to take up development works worth about Rs. 2 crore, including laying of concrete roads, construction of stormwater drains and improvements to parks.
