Irate commuters squat on road

Staff Reporter

TAMBARAM: Irate commuters and residents of Semmancheri near Sholinganallur on Old Mamallapuram Road squatted on the road for about 30 minutes on Thursday, protesting against the shortcomings of Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus services to their localities.More than 300 people, many of them women, squatted at the junction of Old Mamallapuram Road and the road leading to the flats constructed by Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board for tsunami victims.

MTC services

The residents and commuters complained that MTC services from Broadway and High Court did not reach the flats, though it was listed as a terminus.

Further, a number of services from Kelambakkam to Broadway via Sholinganallur did not halt at Semmancheri junction, the residents said.

Traffic disrupted

The protest disrupted traffic for about half-an-hour. Residents and commuters of Kumaran Nagar and Semmancheri urged MTC officials to ensure that all buses towards Chennai city halt at the junction and demanded an increase in the frequency on this stretch during peak hours.

MTC officials reached the spot and pacified the protestors.

They promised that staff would be posted in Semmancheri to ensure that buses reached the TNSCB flats for tsunami victims. Following the assurance, the crowd dispersed.
