COIMBATORE: Bharathiar University will offer B. Tech. programmes in Information Technology, Computer Technology, Netware and Fashion Technology, Manufacture Technology and Textile Technology from the academic year 2007, Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam said here recently. Speaking to presspersons, he said: “Arts and Science colleges affiliated to the university that have good infrastructure will be allowed to offer these courses.” The university was also planning to introduce 25 medical-related courses. The diploma, post-graduate diploma and undergraduate courses would be offered to those students who were interested in pursuing a career in hospitals. School of Tamil
To bring about an interdisciplinary approach to education, the 23 departments of the university would be clubbed into 12 schools. “The School concept will enable sharing of faculty, laboratories, and bring about an interdisciplinary nature in the study of subjects. Two or three related departments will form one School. There will be one Director for each School”. There would be a School of Tamil and other Indian languages. The university had established for the first time a department in English that would be known as School of English and Foreign Languages. It was proposed to introduce German and Japanese to begin with. The departments that do not have good strength would be merged to make them into a department of related popular subject to attract students, said the Vice-Chancellor.
