Students to get free diploma with degree course

Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE: The proposal that the Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University G. Thiruvasagam had made with regard to students taking up a job-oriented diploma course during the course of their degree study, has been implemented.

“The scheme will come into practice from the academic year of 2007”, he told a press conference here recently. The decision came into place after approval from the Standing Committee, Academic Affairs Committee and the Syndicate.

It was to enable students to leave the portals of the college with three certificates – degree, job-oriented diploma and appointment order (acquired at the campus interview).

“The job-oriented or skill-oriented diploma course of their choice will be offered to them free of cost. This is aimed at making them industry-ready and also giving them a chance to learn about something other than their subject. The diploma will be related to their major subject”, he said.

Post-graduate students would have to take up a PG Diploma course. For undergraduate and post-graduate students, a pass in the diploma course would be a must to acquire a degree.

The Vice-Chancellor also announced that the university would do away with the internal assessment system for undergraduate courses from 2007.

This would apply to non-autonomous colleges. Internal assessment for PG courses was revamped. There would be a test for 15 marks, an assignment and seminar presentation for five marks each. The five marks for attendance would be done away with.

To make students employable, a paper in communication skills would be introduced, in the third semester of the degree course. The subject would cover basic grammar, spoken and functional English, situation-based repartee, etc. Regular subject teachers, trained in communication skills, would handle the classes during class hours. Examination would include 25 marks of viva voce.

“Normal English papers will also be revamped. It will be need based and contain less of literature”, the Vice-Chancellor said.

Keeping in mind the decline in moral and ethical values in youth, the university would introduce a compulsory paper on “Human Excellence” in the second semester for the undergraduate courses. Tamil teachers would handle the classes.
