One held with gelatine sticks

Coimbatore: The Q Branch police have arrested S. Rangarajan (31) during a vehicle check near Karamadai on Thursday morning when he was found in unauthorised possession of 143 gelatine sticks and 100 electric detonators.

Contradicting replies

On interception, he is said to have given contradicting replies raising suspicion and examination revealed that the gunny bag on his motorcycle contained explosive materials .

He was not accompanied by any authorisation or licence from the competent authorities for possession or transportation.

Held for fraud

The District Crime Branch police have arrested Venkatapathy alias Saravanan of Pappanaickenpalayam near Sidhapudur on charges of having cheated various mill owners, cotton yarn merchants to a tune of nearly Rs 50 crore.

Though the accused was arrested on the basis of a complaint by Muthusamy in a case of cheque dishonour filed in 2005 complaints were pouring in from various affected businessmen.

Cheque dishonour

It was learnt that Venkatapathy used to establish business relationship with mill owners and merchants and transact with them and win their confidence. After availing loans, Venkatapathy used to leave Coimbatore.

The frauds came to light only when the banks dishonoured the cheques issued by Venkatapathy.

He was arrested by the police, when he came to visit his father at his house at Somanur on Thursday.

Investigations are on.
