Cleanliness drive to be taken up from today

KOCHI: Plastics will soon be banned in schools in the district. The school health clubs will actively participate in the implementation of the ban.

During a videoconferencing session on Thursday, Minister for Education M.A. Baby directed the Deputy Director of Education to impose the ban.

It is part of a cleanliness drive on school premises from Friday following the spread of chikungunya and other diseases in the district. Special assemblies will be held in schools on Friday, during which students will take a pledge to maintain a clean environment.

On Saturday, students will clean classrooms and school compounds. On Monday, they will be asked to clean their houses and localities. On Tuesday, they will submit reports about their activities in the diaries distributed to them under the “My Tree” project.

Continuous process

The Deputy Director asked school authorities to have the cleanliness drive as a continuous process, and not to limit it to a day.

Every Friday, possibly during the last period, classrooms would be cleaned. Besides, headmasters and officials concerned should maintain a clean campus throughout the year.

Enrolment falls

Enrolment of students in schools from classes 1 to 10 dropped by 10,015 this academic year, from 3,77,076 in the previous year to 3,67,061. In Government schools, the number dropped from 74,390 to 68,635, while in aided schools, it fell from 2,53,324 to 2,49,882.

Unaided schools registered a drop of 818, with the number of students falling from 49,362 to 48,544.
