KOCHI: The eviction drive went on in at least four taluks in Ernakulam district on Thursday as revenue authorities stepped up action against encroachers of Government land.

In Kothamangalam taluk, more than 10 cents of land was recovered from a hotelier, who had encroached on the Kuroor creek in Kothamangalam town.

The reclaimed land was being used as a private road to the hotel. Portions of the hotel on the encroached area were pulled down, an official said. The market value of the property is estimated at Rs. 80 lakh.

Fifty revenue officials, municipal authorities and a large posse of police participated in the three-hour drive. Though the hotel owner secured a stay, the land was recovered by then, the official said.

The Kothamangalam municipal authorities will launch on Friday an eviction drive against violators of building rules.

Notices issued

As many as 140 notices had been issued to those in the area from Thankalam to the town, a municipal official said.

However, many encroachers had voluntarily removed the illegal structures.

In Kochi taluk, four encroachments on the backwater puramboke were cleared in Edakochi Village, resuming 55 cents, the market rate of which can be about Rs. 55 lakh.

So far, the revenue officials have recovered 30 cents in Pallipuram village, 65 in Edakochi, 22.5 in Thoppumpady and eight in Kuzhupilli. The market value of the entire land resumed could be about Rs. 1.5 crore, an official said.

Six persons had encroached upon the island-like land and cultivated coconut, mango, plantain and so on. Four temporary sheds on the encroached land were pulled down.

Three notices were served on encroachers in the Varapuzha area.

In Kanayannur taluk, survey along the Chilavannur backwater detected encroachments measuring up to 74 cents. Notices will be issued after the completion of the survey.
