KOCHI: As part of the first anniversary celebration of the V.S. Achuthanandan Government, the Ernakulam district administration on Thursday paid about Rs. 65 lakh in financial aid to hundreds of beneficiaries of over 12 welfare schemes. The aid, distributed at a function held at the Town Hall, included pensions for widows, farm workers and people with disabilities; relief money under various workers’ welfare schemes; unemployment dole; wedding assistance; seed money for self-employment units; and loans. Minister for Fisheries S. Sarma, who opened the district-level anniversary celebration, said criticisms and controversies as well as appreciations were part of governance and the Government’s policy was to move forward by taking them in its stride. MLAs from the district and senior Government officials attended the meeting. A photo exhibition that highlighted the major achievements of the Government, including the signing of the Smart City project agreement and the anti-encroachment drive, was held in the Town Hall as part of the anniversary celebration.
