Health officer suspended

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Health officer of the city Corporation P. Santha was suspended from service for her alleged failure in properly presenting before the Kerala High Court the details of the cleanliness drive undertaken by the civic body. She also failed to properly implement the cleanliness programmes, Mayor Mercy Williams said at a press conference here on Thursday.

Ms. Williams warned Corporation officials of stern action if they failed in their duty of getting garbage cleared.

The solid-waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram would be completed within a year, and the Andhra Pradesh Technology Development Corporation, which had undertaken the work, would hand over the work schedule to the Corporation next week. A countdown board on the progress of the work would be displayed at the Corporation office, she said.

Piling work for the plant would begin on Friday. The filling of the site would be completed soon. The Greater Cochin Development Authority had allotted 80 cents of land for a decentralised waste-treatment plant at Mundamveli.

The Corporation had set up several biogas plants in various parts of the city. Five more of them would come up.

Four medical camps would be held in the city on June 17 as part of a preventive drive against fever and other contagious diseases, she said.
