Corrections and Clarifications

* The sixth paragraph in a report "How the President is elected" (June 14, 2007) gave the formula for determining the quota for a candidate to be declared in the Presidential election as: "For example, assuming the total value of valid votes polled by all candidates is 1,00,001, the quota required for getting elected is: 1,00,001 + 1 = 50,000.50 + 1 (Ignore .50). Quota = 50,000 + 1 = 50,0001." It should have been "... 1,00,001/2 + 1 = 50,000.50 +1 (Ignore .50) ... ." Divided by two was missing. (The formula was quoted correctly in the fifth paragraph.)

* A sentence in a report "Win-win situation, say Rajasthanis" (June 15, 2007) was: "Till the black horse in the race emerged on Thursday evening, the average Rajasthani was rooting for its son of the soil." It should have been "Till the dark horse ... ." (The report was on the reaction of Rajasthan to the nomination of Rajasthan Governor Pratibha Devisingh Patil as the UPA's Presidential candidate.)

* In an article "Speaking of Science — Cram schools and entrance exams" (Science & Technology" page, June 14, 2007), the url of the book "One Hundred Reasons to be a Scientist" (which can be downloaded free) should have been: http://www.ictp.trieste.it/krs/100reasons.pdf, and not http://users.ictp.it/krs/100reasons.pdf as was published.

* It is the Gujarat Crime Investigation Department and not the Gujarat Central Investigation Department, as was published in an ANI report "Court says `no' to narco-test" ("Briefly", June 15, 2007, page 1).

* A report "Tirupur exporters eye Uzbekistan" ("Business" page, June 15, 2007) was repeated in some of the Tamil Nadu editions as "Exporters [from Tirupur] explore possibilities of setting up [textile] mills in Uzbekistan". It was a technical error.

* A sentence in a report "Transfer police officials en masse [to maintain law and order in Chennai]: [Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S.] Ramadoss" was: "Dr. Ramadoss said that until the rowdy-police-political nexus continued, peace would be at peril." The sentence should have been "Dr. Ramadoss said that as long as the rowdy-police-political nexus continued, peace would be at peril." (In some editions, the report went with the heading "Ramadoss calls for en masse transfer of police officials in Chennai".)
