Ashram land to be commercially used

Special Correspondent

PATNA : The land of the historic Sadaquat Ashram, headquarters of the Bihar unit of the Congress, is likely to be used for commercial purposes.

Party general secretary Digvijay Singh, who is also in charge of Bihar affairs, said that the party had sought a detailed report on how best to use the land of the sprawling Ashram, the foundation for which was laid by Mahatma Gandhi in 1917 when he visited Champaran district in connection with his Indigo Movement.

He said the party intended to make effective use of the land at its disposal in a few other States as well. It was considering leasing or selling a good part of the land, which also houses the memorial of the first President Rajendra Prasad. He said that it was being misused and there were also encroachments. A proposal was sent in March last to the party high command, but it had asked for a fresh one.

The ashram was the AICC headquarters when Acharya J.B. Kriplani was party president.
