No irregularities in adoption: CARA

Denmark had suspended adoptions after a parent alleged problems

NEW DELHI: The Central Adoption Resource Agency (CARA), the nodal agency for adoption of children, on Friday denied reports of irregularities in adoption. Denmark had suspended all adoptions from India after a parent alleged that his children were given away in adoption without his consent.

CARA chairperson J.K. Mittal said an enquiry was ordered into the matter. The preliminary enquiry showed that the biological father himself had approached the adoption agency concerned in Pune through a social worker to make his four children available for rehabilitation.

The biological father gave his consent on a stamp paper on April 9, 2002 to the agency concerned to place his four children for adoption, he said.

His sister and brother-in-law signed this consent, which forms part of the relinquishment deed, as witnesses and the same was countersigned by the Juvenile Welfare Board chairman.

The deed was written in Marathi, mother tongue of the biological father who is stated to be a matriculate. Hence, he could easily understand the deed.

These facts lead the CARA to believe that the adoption process in this case was initiated with the consent of the biological father. However, detailed investigations were on, Mr. Mittal said.
