dated June 16, 1957: Nehru in Syria

Prime Minister Nehru said at a banquet in Damascus on June 14 that while nuclear bombs could massacre a great number of people, "they are incapable of conquering the human spirit." He said: "The use of these bombs which represents the idea of evil cannot and should not be combated by violence but by peaceful means which freedom-loving people could employ by getting together and declaring themselves in favour of peaceful co-existence." At the banquet, Syrian President Kuwatli told Mr. Nehru that Syria was very happy to receive him, "a sincere friend of the freedom and dignity of peoples." Mr. Nehru began his speech by thanking the Syrians for the warm welcome. He said the people of Asia must free themselves not only on the political but also on the economic and social plane. "We wish ill to no one, not even the people of Europe who dominated us for so long. However, we want to be free and protected from servitude." He declared that the people of Asia were awakening and wanted to build their future in freedom and he was sure they would succeed in carrying out this resolution.
