ANANTAPUR: Delhi staved off a stiff challenge from Kerala 75-56 in a girls' group B match of the junior National basketball championships at the District Sports Authority (DSA) Stadium here on Friday. At the breather, Delhi led 33-22. Kerala's players showed a lot of skill and almost made up for their lack of height. A quartet of baskets scored almost single-handedly by the diminutive Anu K.S. in the third quarter, which left the rival defence bemused, simply stood out. Ashey and Seena kept the good work up near the post.
Relentless assault
The Delhi assault, meanwhile, was relentless, despite a number of fouls. With two internationals in its ranks, it effected a handful of `steals' and was also better while reaching out for the rebounds. Advancing to the quarterfinals were U.P., Punjab and the Rajasthan boys from Group A, Delhi and Chattisgarh and Tamil Nadu from Group B. On the distaff side, Chattisgarh, Maharashtra and Punjab from Group A, M.P., Delhi and Kerala from Group B made the quarterfinals. Two teams from each section will complete the knock-out last eight line-up in Saturday's Level II engagements.
