Monsoon aids Kharif sowing season

With the advent of the southwest monsoon, kharif sowing is progressing well, the Agriculture Ministry said here on Friday.

Rice transplantation

Transplanting of rice has commenced in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Orissa, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand and West Bengal, covering an area of 11.61 lakh hectares as against 10.65 lakh hectares sown this time last year.

So far jower has been sown in an area of 1.406 lakh hectares, while bajra covers 0.470 lakh hectares and maize 3.989 lakh hectares. The area covered under cotton is 15.230 lakh hectares as against 14.650 lakh hectares last year.

Of this, 8.68 lakh hectares is under Bt. Cotton.

Jute plantation

Sugarcane covers 44.020 lakh hectares and jute plantation covers 7.819 lakh hectares, the weekly Crop Weather Watch Group meeting the Ministry of Agriculture was informed here on Friday.
