LAST DAY: Students filling up admission forms on the last day of submission at Kirori Mal College on the North Campus on Friday. Photo: Sushil Kumar Verma
Sale and receipt of common pre-admission forms and information bulletins for the upcoming new academic year of Delhi University ended on Friday with nearly 1.32 lakh forms being sold this year. Though the time for sale and receipt of forms was from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., most of the 17 admission information centres across the city continued accepting forms up to 5 in the evening on the last day. Though there were comparatively shorter queues, there were quite a few students who came to buy the forms on Friday well after the 1 p.m. deadline. According to Deputy Dean of Students' Welfare Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, 4,000 forms were sold on the last day. "There were many outstation students who came on the last day to buy the forms. People kept coming even after 5 p.m. There were many who did not even know that today was the last day for sale and receipt of forms and were caught unawares on reaching the centres," said an official at the Office of the Dean Students' Welfare on the North Campus. However, of the 1.32 lakh forms sold, only around 92,000 have been submitted.
Panic buying
Explaining the reason for this gap, Dr. Tuteja said: "There is panic buying among students in the first few days which is why they end up buying surplus forms. Now since they can fill only one form, they do not know what to do with the extra ones. They can't sell it also, so there is a lot of wastage. Also, while filling the forms, children tend to make mistakes and then for the fear of rejection they buy another form." As many as 11,486 forms have been registered under the SC/ST category. Some were registered provisionally in the absence of proper documents and candidates have been given time till June 21 to submit the required certificates or mark sheets to the University. In the physically handicapped category, 318 forms have been submitted, while some cases are still under consideration. Now that the rush for admissions is over, students will eagerly wait for the first cut-off list that will be announced by the colleges on June 26.
