WORDS OF SUPPORT: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala and School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu interact with the Rajyapuraskar winners at Raj Bhavan on Friday. —
Chennai: The rain-washed lawns of Raj Bhavan played host to Scouts and Guides who received the Rajyapuraskar awards on Friday. Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, who presented the awards, said the Scouts and Guides movement moulded the character of students during their high school years. He urged them to promote awareness on cleanliness, tree-planting and voluntary service to society. “The State and the nation expect a lot from you… I earnestly appeal to all the Scouts and Guides not to de-link yourselves from this movement after the completion of school,” said Mr. Barnala, who was a Scout during his school days. This year, 7,449 Scouts and Guides won the awards. The Governor presented certificates to about 120 students selected to receive the award at the Raj Bhavan function. School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu, who was also a Scout, urged all schools to start the movement. The community service and outdoor camps that form a part of the movement would provide lifetime experiences, he said. School Education Secretary M. Kutralingam said Scouts and Guides had participated in several programmes for the welfare of the people affected by the tsunami. Since 1989, Tamil Nadu has produced 58,865 Rajayapuraskar awardees. About 11,300 students have won the national-level Rashtrapathi awards.
