KADAPA: Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy, Kadapa MP, called upon officials on Friday to create awareness among women on advantages of keeping surroundings clean and systematic disposal of garbage. Speaking after inaugurating Kadapa Municipal Corporation’s vermicompost shed built at a cost of Rs. 16 lakh, the MP said women should also be motivated to segregate organic and inorganic waste before disposal. The corporation could earn revenue by converting garbage into organic manure and recycling the waste. Project Coordinator of APUSP B. Janardhana Reddy, who also addressed an awareness meet in the municipal corporation, said improper garbage disposal could lead to 26 diseases. A survey among six lakh families revealed that each family spent at least Rs. 5,000 per month on treatment of illnesses caused by insanitation. Reduction of quantum of garbage, reuse and recycling would lead to saving of money, besides accruing revenue to civic bodies, he said. Municipal bodies should tie-up with the Marketing and Horticultural Departments to sell organic manure and help increase agriculture production, Mr. Reddy said. The Municipal Commissioners had been trained on these aspects, but many of them were yet to put it into use, he remarked. Twelve-lakh people would be trained this year, he said. He asked other Municipal Commissioners to adopt solid waste management on lines of Kadapa. Proposals
