No end to contract lecturers’ strike

N. RahulSpecial Correspondent

HYDERABAD : The negotiations of representatives of the striking contract lecturers with the State Government ended inconclusively here on Friday in the absence of senior officials. Led by NGO leaders, V. Gopal Reddy and T. Sudhakar, the contract lecturers held a meeting with the Higher Education Minister, D. Srinivas, at the Secretariat in the wake of the police forcibly evicting their hunger strike camp near Sundaraiah Park at Bagh Lingampally on Thursday night. The Minister heard the delegation and invited them for talks again on Monday as the Principal Secretary of his department, Ashutosh Mishra, was on leave. Mr. Srinivas requested the NGO leaders to proceed to Gandhi Hospital and persuade participants in the hunger strike to call off their agitation. The lecturers were continuing their fast in the hospital after they were shifted from the camp by police. The lecturers took the agitation demanding, among others, extension of their contract which the Government had terminated to pave way for recruitment of lecturers on a regular basis. The Contract Lecturers Association general secretary, K. Suresh, told reporters after the meeting that the Minister had assured not to take up the recruitment until the problem of contract lecturers was resolved. The AP NGOs Association president, V. Gopal Reddy, said the Minister had promised to consider the demands positively. eom/
