BHUBANESWAR: The registration of a criminal case against a journalist and a social worker at Sinapali police station in Nuapada district with charges of sedition was condemned at a meeting on Friday. The speakers criticised the Naveen Patnaik Government for “gagging the media” by slapping serious charge of sedition against the journalist and the social worker. They demanded that the Section 124(A) be repealed and the Government immediately drop the chargesagainst the two persons who had helped a team of television journalists in doing a story. The television report had showed that people of Nangalghat village, belonging to the Paharia community, were consuming a particular variety of stone available in their locality. If the Government thought the report that was telecast by at least four television channels was not true, the authorities should have issued a denial or approached the Press Council seeking remedy, the speakers observed. ‘Not involved’
Stating that the two persons against whom the case had been registered were not working for any of the channels that telecast the story, the speakers criticised the Government for not initiating action against television channel crew. The meeting that was attended by a number of educationists, social activist and journalists was presided over by Swadhin Patnaik, Director, Institute of Mathematics, Bhubaneswar.
