LUCKNOW: The Union Minister of State for Commerce, Jairam Ramesh, said here on Saturday that in the next five years, steps would be taken to boost the export of non-traditional spices such as mint (`pudina'), coriander, fennel (`saunf'), fenugreek (`methi') and cumin (`jeera'). Mr. Ramesh, who addressed the Horticulture Summit held here, told reporters that thus far the export of spices was pepper and cardamom-centric, with Kerala accounting for 90 per cent of production. Of the total export of spices, 23 per cent share was that of mint products and 80 per cent production of `pudina' and other mint products was in Uttar Pradesh. Mr. Ramesh said his Ministry had proposed to the U.P. Government the setting up of a `pudina' park on 100 acres of land, on the lines of the spices park in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. He said the Ministry had identified the leather, handicrafts and mango sectors in U.P. for creating new jobs. These included setting up an integrated leather park at Kanpur and Agra and increasing the leather exports to $7-billion by 2011. U.P.'s contribution to the total exports was 20 per cent.
