Steps being taken to control mosquito breeding

Twentyfive-member medical team to camp in Mahe

Puducherry: Health Minister E. Valsaraj has said that a 25-member medical team from Puducherry Headquarters Hospital will camp in Mahe region from Monday to take steps to control breeding of mosquitoes and ensure that chikungunya reported in the Kerala did not spread to Mahe.

Handing over fogging machines to municipalities and commune panchayats in the Puducherry and Karaikal regions at the Indira Gandhi General Hospital and PG Institute here on Friday, Mr. Valsaraj said that the machines would be used during day time. He said Puducherry and outer regions did not report incidents of chikungunya. "Parmanets" (chemical nets used to kill mosquitoes) would be distributed to each of 50,000 families belonging to "below poverty line" category.

A spokesman of the Health Department official said that the department had identified vulnerable areas. The grass root-level workers in the Municipal bodies were being trained to handle the fogging machines.

Mr. Valsaraj said that the general hospital in Puducherry would soon emerge as a model hospital as the facilities of super speciality disciplines were being added to it. The Rs.5-crore cathlab would be commissioned soon.

Chairperson of Puducherry Municipality B. Sridevi, Director of Local Administration Department E. Vallavan and Director of Health and Family Welfare Services Dilip Kumar Baliga spoke.

Medical Superintendent N. Govindarajan, Municipal Councillor Indra Somani, chairmen of the various commune panchayats from Puducherry, Oulgaret and Karaikal regions and Municipal Commissioners N. Sumathi (Puducherry) and D. Thiagarajan (Oulgaret) were present.
