BJP demands solution to water dispute

Staff Reporter

Haryana Govt. charged with not releasing water for Delhi

NEW DELHI: Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan on Saturday demanded that Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil immediately convene a meeting of the Chief Ministers of Delhi and Haryana to find a permanent solution to the water dispute between the two States.

Charging that the Haryana Government was deliberately not releasing water for Delhi, Dr. Vardhan said this had led to a marked fall in the water level of the Yamuna canal and also affected the production at the Haiderpur and Nangloi water treatment plants.

Due to inadequate supply of water in most parts of the city, the BJP leader said residents of numerous colonies have been compelled to pay exorbitant sums for purchasing water from tankers. Those living on the upper floors of buildings in Delhi were bearing the brunt of the crisis as they also have to haul the water up to their homes.

Stating that the Delhi Chief Secretary's merely writing a letter to his Haryana counterpart would not suffice, Dr. Vardhan said the Centre should intervene to provide Delhi its share of water from Haryana. "The Central Water Commission and the Supreme Court have issued justified directions to the Haryana Government for solving this problem, yet it has been openly violating these directions,'' he said.
