Good response for Indian mangoes in U.S.

Lucknow: Delicious Indian mangoes which found their way to the United States in April this year, are getting a good response, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said here on Saturday.

The Indian mangoes are being sold in the U.S. market at four dollars a piece which is a huge amount in comparison to that charged in the domestic markets, Mr. Pawar said.

Mr.Pawar, who was here to take part in a seminar of National Horticulture Organisations, said that earlier our mangoes were not allowed to be sold in U.S. and Japan.

The U.S. eased its phytosanitary norms in April this year, allowing imports of Indian mangoes, after India relaxed its emission standards and permitted cult bike maker Harley Davidson to sell its motorcycles in the country.

Earlier, Mexican mangoes were sold in the U.S. predominantly, but ``now four varieties (of Indian mangoes) — Langra, Dussehri, Hapus and Begumpuri — are being exported there and they are getting a good response,'' he said.

Mr. Pawar said that the Centre had set-up a national mission to give a boost to the sale of horticulture products in the country.

He said that 4.5 lakh hectares of land were brought under horticulture during the past one year.

The Minister said that there was a great export potential in horticulture. In Uttar Pradesh, the areas in and around Lucknow and Pratapgarh, which are famous for mangoes, hold great potential, he added.

Mr. Pawar also said that he would be talking to the State government to develop these areas to a give a fillip to mango exports. — PTI
