Ashwin shines in qualifying

Coimbatore: It was Ashwin Sundar's day out at the Kari Motor Speedway in Chettipalayam on Saturday. The 18-year-old from Chennai clinched a double pole each in both the Formula LGB Swift and Hyundai classes in the opening leg of the 10th JK Tyre National racing championship much to the joy of his team - Rams Racing.

Ashwin not only hit the top spot but also recorded the fastest lap timings of 1:11:491s and 1:11:588s in the qualifying races of the Formula LGB Swift category.

Aditya Patel, from the stables of the newly formed Team Gemini Racing, was the next best followed by Saahil Shelar of Team Wallace Sports-Leela. The duo sealed the second and third position on the grid for the season's opener on Sunday.

Roaring form

Ashwin continued with his roaring form in the Formula Hyundai class capturing the pole and the fastest timings in both races. Rayomand Banajee of Team Gemini Racing was the second fastest in the opening race but fell short of his best to finish third in the second. Anand Prasad, team owner Gemini Racing, also came up with a decent showing finishing second and third on the grid for both the races.

In the AMRC Cup, Rikaaz Khalid of Sri Lanka made merry with a double pole, while compatriots Maneendra and Nadeera Jinasena finished for the next two places.

To give the drivers a bit of breathing space for both testing and practice, the qualifying races of the Formula Rolon was shifted to the evening.

Formula Hyundai: Race 1: 1. Ashwin, 2. Rayomand Banajee (Team Gemini Racing), 3. Anand Prasad (Team Gemini Racing). Race 2: 1. Ashwin, 2. Anand Prasad, Rayomand Banajee.
