Double for Maria

IRINJALAKUDA: Maria Rony, a very promising talent from the Alappuzha YMCA TT Academy, won a double in the 18th Don Bosco Open all-Kerala table tennis tournament at the Don Bosco indoor Stadium here on Saturday evening.

Maria bagged the sub-junior and cadet girls titles, prevailing over Kochi's Gayathri Girish and Reshma Susan in the two finals. Alappuzha's S. Sundar lifted the sub-junior boys trophy while Ernakulam's Rishwin Jackson took the cadet boys title.

The results: Boys: Final: Sub-junior: S. Sundar (AYTTA, Alp) bt Renjith Benny (NKM, Tvm) 11-9, 11-7, 11-6. Semifinal: Sunda bt Jobinson James (Wyd) 12-10, 11-1, 11-5.

Final: Cadet: Rishwin Jackson (RSC, Kochi) bt Renjith Benny (NKM, Tvm) 11-9, 12-10, 7-11, 5-11, 12-10. Semifinals: Rishwin bt Rohit Binu Mathew (AYTTA) 7-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-2; Renjith bt Abraham Joseph (Kzd) 12-10, 14-12, 14-12.

Girls: Final: Sub-junior: Maria Rony (AYTTA) bt Gayathri Girish (RSC, Kochi) 11-6, 11-6, 11-5. Semifinals: Maria bt Anjaly S. Nair (NKM, Tvm) 11-9, 11-9, 11-4; Gayathri bt Reshma Susan (RSC) 11-7, 6-11, 11-9, 7-11, 13-11.

Girls: Cadet: Final: Maria Rony bt Reshma Susan 11-7, 5-11, 11-5, 11-8. Semifinals: Maria bt Gayathri Girish 11-3, 11-5, 7-11, 11-8; Reshma bt Seraha Jacob (AYTTA) 8-11, 10-12, 14-12, 11-6, 11-6.
