MOVING ON: Dodda Ganesh, who now wants to concentrate on a career in politics, with his wife and children.
Bangalore: A feisty bowler faded away at the Chinnaswamy Stadium's P2 Hall here on Saturday evening. Former India seamer Dodda Ganesh, who was a key member in Karnataka's Ranji Trophy winning teams in the 90s, announced his retirement with a straight-from-the-heart speech in chaste Kannada while his illustrious teammates Anil Kumble and Venkatesh Prasad nodded in approval. Ganesh played four Tests and a lone ODI for India during the twin tours of South Africa and West Indies in 1997. He, however, failed to cement his place and a comeback proved elusive despite a consistent haul of wickets in the domestic circuit besides some good performances with the India `A' side. Ganesh will, however, be remembered for his exploits with the Karnataka team and in 104 first-class games, he scalped 365 wickets and scored 2023 runs inclusive of a Ranji hundred. "I come from a humble background and I owe a lot to my coaches especially Raghunath Beerala, my teammates and the KSCA. I always dreamt of playing for Karnataka more than playing for India as it was tougher to get a place here considering that Javagal Srinath, Prasad and David Johnson were all part of the attack. "My memorable moments were being part of the Ranji Trophy title winning teams. I thank Kumble, Srinath, Prasad and others for their encouragement," Ganesh said.
