Adhiban stops Prathamesh

Principal Correspondent

DINDIGUL: The dream run of Prathamesh Mokal finally came to an end on Saturday. B. Adhiban's win over the sole overnight leader not merely helped the Chennai-based youngster move into the lead, but opened up the 45th National `B' chess championship as well.

Prathamesh and Adhiban are leading the table with seven points apiece, followed half-a-point behind by six players, as all the top 10 boards except one produced decisive results at the PSNA College of Engineering and Technology.

With five rounds remaining, on 6.5 points are second-seed M.R. Ventakesh, seventh-seed K. Ratnakaran, Akshat Khamparia, S. Satyapragyan, V. Saravanan and N. Sanjay.

Adhiban, who had finished runner-up at the National under-17 championship in Kozhikode earlier this year, did well to stop the seven-game winning streak of Prathamesh on the top board. Playing with white, he won in 33 moves of Sicilian Defence. He sacrificed a rook and launched a devastating attack against Black's uncastled king, mobilising all his pieces nicely.

On the second board, Akshat held fourth-seed Sundararajan Kidambi in 14 moves of Nimzo-Indian Defence, on the third, Venkatesh defeated little Vidit Santosh Gujrathi in 40 moves of Sicilian Defence and on the fourth, Ratnakaran outwitted Vikramaditya Kamble in 44 moves of his pet French Defence.
