NEW DELHI: The Delhi University Teachers' Association and the Department of Slavonic and Finno-Ugrian Studies faculty members have protested against the manner in which the department was shifted from the South Campus of the University to the North Campus recently. "The arbitrary and manipulative manner in which the department was shifted goes against all values and norms a prime academic institution like the University of Delhi is supposed to uphold," said DUTA president Amar Deo Sharma. The elected members of the Academic Council and Executive Council also took part in a demonstration staged by DUTA and the faculty members outside the office of the Vice-Chancellor. The Department of Slavonic and Finno-Ugrian Studies has been in existence on the South Campus for the past 18 years. Some of the teachers of the department said they were shocked to learn that it was shifted without their knowledge a week ago on a Saturday -- a non-working day. "Several representations and resolutions have been submitted to Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental on this issue over the past few months, requesting him to reconsider this unilateral decision and bring the matter on the agenda of the Academic Council for a discussion," said a faculty member. "All rules have been flouted. At least the Head of the Department should have informed us of the decision. We were not given any notice," the member alleged. Demanding a rollback of the decision, Mr. Sharma said: "The DUTA views this move as part of a conspiracy of doing away with liberal arts and humanities on the South Campus."
