Chandy for reforms with human face

Staff Reporter

KANNUR: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has called for economic reforms with human face, admitting that the economic growth achieved by the country justifies the reforms introduced by the Narasimha Rao Government in 1991.

Releasing the book ‘Economic Reforms and Regional Inequality in India’ authored by K. Gangadharan, head of the Economics Department of the Kannur University, here on Saturday, Mr. Chandy said that the economic reforms had been introduced at a time when the country’s economy was facing serious problems. Recalling the protests drawn by the economic reforms, he said the country’s progress since then vindicated the decisions of the Narasimha Rao Government.

Mr. Chandy also said that no Government could ignore the importance of equitable distribution of the benefits of the economic growth as the country still had a large section of poor people. “You cannot speak of democracy without taking care of people living in abject poverty,” he said. Vice-Chancellor P. Chandramohan presided over the function. Pro Vice-Chancellor K. Kunhikrishnan received a copy of the book from Mr. Chandy.
