Rights panel hears views on school assembly

KOZHIKODE: The State Human Rights Commission on Saturday heard arguments for and against the present system of conducting school assembly in which students often have to stand in the sun.

Justice V.P. Mohan Kumar of Human Rights Commission later said a decision on the petition filed on this matter by Dr. C. Naseema of Calicut University would be taken after carefully studying the issue.

Deputy Director (Education) Vinod Babu and Dr. Jacob Vadakkancherry were among those who presented their views before the Commission.

Several individuals and organisations also presented their views on this matter during the sitting of the Human Rights Commission on Saturday.

The Commission also directed the district administration to place before it all relevant evidence related to the fire that destroyed shops on Moindeenpally Road in the city.

The police and fire force have also been told to furnish evidence in their possession. The Commission has asked for information regarding volume of the stock of explosives kept in the shop where the fire started, and the place from where these were purchased

Kozhikode Corporation secretary Ravindran, Fire and Rescue Services divisional officer E.B. Prasad, Deputy Collector K.K. Bharathy and Assistant Commissioner of Police Jayendran appeared before the Commission when this issue was taken up.
