Housing officials face the axe

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The State Government has started cracking the whip on erring officials of the Housing Department following reports of irregularities in the implementation of Indiramma housing scheme.

It has suspended an assistant engineer Samuel of Nuzvid division in Krishna district after his involvement in irregularities was confirmed by the Vigilance & Enforcement Department. Services of two work inspectors, appointed on contract basis in Ghanpur mandal of Warangal district, have been terminated while an assistant engineer was placed under suspension after detection of diversion of two truck loads of cement.

Housing Minister Botcha Satyanarayana told reporters here on Saturday that criminal proceedings would be initiated against those involved in mal-practices in the Indiramma scheme. The department had taken steps to plug the leakages and initiated action whenever lapses were pointed out.

Special purpose vehicle

The Minister, who earlier participated in a meeting convened by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to review the progress of Rajiv Gruha Kalpa, said it was decided to hand over houses completed in all respects to the allottees by December next year. The Government would float a special purpose vehicle (SPV) along with an autonomous body to monitor the progress of the works from time to time.

The SPV would be handed over house sites by July 15 following which the cost of the housing units would be worked out. Work would commence after obtaining the willingness of allottees.
