Special Correspondent
GULBARGA: Inspector General of Police R.K. Dutta on Saturday said the only solution to communal and caste conflicts was to encourage more inter-caste marriages and change the mindset of people to accept the fact that every religion preached universal peace and respect for all. Participating in the Buddha Basava Ambedkar Jayanthi celebrations organised by the Poojya Doddappa Appa College of Engineering here, Mr. Dutta said even social reformers such as Buddha, Basaveshwara and B.R. Ambedkar have been appropriated as icons by some castes and religious groups and their birth anniversaries observed by members of the communities. He said neither Lord Buddha, Basaveshwara or Dr. Ambedkar belonged to any one particular caste or community, they were universal leaders who spent their entire life fighting against the caste system and injustice meted out to the people . He said it would be ideal if the statues of Dr. Ambedkar is installed in areas dominated by upper castes and the statues of Basaveshwara is installed in Dalit. This practice of “Varnashrama” continued even now in a new form, Mr. Dutta said . Mr. Dutta said although the country achieved political democracy, social and economic democracy was still a far cry for the common man and the growth achieved by the country in the recent years could not benefit every citizen. Sri Chennaveera Shivacharyaru of the Harkud Math inaugurated the celebrations Principal of the college V.D. Mytri welcomed the gathering.
