Banks seek funds for providing crop loan

Special Correspondent

To facilitate disbursal of loans to farmers

NAGAPATTINAM: The primary agricultural cooperative banks (PACBs) in the district have requested the Kumbakonam Central Cooperative Bank and also Government to allocate more funds to enable the banks to provide crop loans without any delay to farmers in the district for cultivating the ‘kuruvai’ paddy crop.

Farmers in several villages have appealed to the Collector to take steps to allocate sufficient funds to the PACBs to meet the requirement of loans by the farmers as many banks are starved of funds.

Several small and marginal farmers in the district told The Hindu that the banks had started accepting certificates issued by the Village Administrative Officers with regard to holding of land and other details of the farmers for is suing loans. However, commercial banks were still insisting on computerised `chitta’ from the respective taluk offices for granting crop loan.

Meanwhile, farmers who have raised the short-term ‘kuruvai’ paddy crop in about 15,000 hectares so far out of the normal area of 25,000 hectares in the Cauvery division command area of Mayiladuturai and Sirkazhi belt with the help of agricultural pump sets are anxiously awaiting the release of water from the Mettur reservoir for irrigation. But, the ryots in the Vennar division command areas of Nagapattinam, Vedaranyam, Thalainayar and Kilvelur blocks in the district who depend only on the river water for irrigation to cultivate ‘kuruvai’ crop in about 10,000 hectares are yet to prepare their land for raising the crop and anticipating early release of Mettur water for irrigation.
