Death case proceedings adjourned

Kochi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Court, on Saturday, adjourned proceedings in the Naxalite leader A. Varghese death case to June 25.

The adjournment was made as the former Inspector-General of Police K. Lakshmana failed to appear before the court on Saturday. P. Vijayan, former Director-General of Police, was present. Mr. Lakshmana sought exemption from appearance on the ground that he was indisposed. They will now appear on June 25. The charge sheets will be read out to them.

The CBI had taken over the investigation on a Kerala High Court directive. The court had directed the agency to register a criminal case on the basis of a counter-affidavit filed by P. Ramachandran Nair, retired constable, saying that Varghese was shot dead at 6.55 p.m. on February 18, 1970. Ramachandran Nair later died.

After examining 71 witnesses and 44 documents, the CBI has come to the conclusion that Varghese was shot dead by Ramachandran Nair at the instance of the former senior police officers.
