Collector inspects Gundlakamma irrigation project works

First fast track irrigation projects getting ready in the State
Collector visits rehabilitation colonies under construction

ONGOLE : District Collector K Devanand said on Saturday there was immense potential to develop Gundlakamma irrigation project at Mallavaram as a tourist centre in Prakasam district.

Surplus water

The irrigation project has been taken up at a cost of Rs. 650 crores to provide irrigation facility to 80,000 acres making use of surplus water from Nagarjuna Sagar canals going waste into the sea now. The project will be completed in all aspects to release water to the ayacut from this August. It may well be the first among fast track irrigation projects getting ready in the State. Mr Devanand inspected the project and witnessed the earth works going at feverish pitch to close the embankment and the gorge portion. The project was constructed overlooking the famous Rama temple atop the hill in Mallavaram village amidst picturesque surroundings with potential to attract tourists.

The Collector also visited the rehabilitation colonies being constructed for accommodating oustees of four villages which will be submerged totally and eight villages which will face partial submersion. He insisted that the oustees should construct individual sanitary latrines in the rehabilitation colonies. He warned them that their housing plots would be taken back if they failed to construct houses in them immediately.

He expressed unhappiness over poor quality of taps provided by panchayat raj department in the new colonies for drinking water purposes. He exhorted the people to be vigilant on quality of infrastructure being provided by the Government in their colonies.

The Collector later visited Ramatheertham project also which will help stabilise Nagarjuna Sagar ayacut and supply drinking water to Kandukur. He was accompanied by Joint Collector, Siddhartha Jain and Special Collector, Land Acquistion, Ramasubba Reddy.
