Lenin eyes World meet

VIJAYAWADA: For 22-year-old city archer Cherukuri Lenin, another moment of glory has come in the form of selection to the Indian team that would take part in the prestigious World Championship to be held at Leipzig in Germany from July 7 to 15.

Lenin looked visibly ecstatic on Saturday, a day after the news was out, as this would be his maiden appearance in the World Championship, where best teams from the United States, Australia, Korea, China and Japan would vie for honours.

Lenin, who finished first in the compound segment in the ranking tournaments held at Hyderabad and Pune, took the second spot in the Kolkata tourney, losing his first place to Rajasthan’s Jayanthilal by just two points.

“I garnered 118 points out of 123, while Jayanthilal accumulated 120. I am looking forward to perform well in the tourney. I will be in Hyderabad for a couple of days, as I will be joining the South Central Railway. Later, I will be joining the Indian camp at Kolkata for a rigorous training under the watchful eyes of Korean coach Mun Baek Woon,” he said.

Lenin said he was now in the possession of best of the equipment to match international standards. “I need to improve my level of concentration, especially during crunch situations,” he felt.

Lenin, a student of SRR & CVR College, also said that emphasis in the camp would be on team training, as India would be taking part in the team championship. “The camp will primarily focus on the weaknesses of our team and will lay emphasis on how to overcome them,” he added.
